Blackjack table layout and betting areas
Learn the blackjack table layout: player betting circles, dealer cards, shoe, discard tray and payout labels. Follow a hand from wager to settlement.
Where the cards and wagers go
A blackjack table normally has player positions around a curved edge, with the dealer opposite them. Each player’s main betting circle or box sits in front of that seat. Place the initial wager there before cards are dealt. The labels and arrangement vary by table.
| Area | What it contains | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Player betting circle | Your main wager | Table minimum and maximum |
| Player card area | Your dealt hand | Keep cards and bets in the designated area |
| Dealer card area | Upcard and hole card | US peek or a different dealing procedure |
| Shoe or dealing area | Cards to be dealt | Deck count and shuffle procedure |
| Discard tray | Cards already played | Discarded cards are out of the current hand |
| Insurance area | Separate optional insurance wager | Dealer ace, stake limit and 2:1 insurance payout |
| Rule labels | Natural payout and dealer drawing rule | 3:2 or 6:5; H17 or S17 |
| Side-bet spots | Separate optional wagers | Separate rules and payout schedules |
Main wager, insurance and side bets
The main betting circle is for the hand played against the dealer. An insurance line or marked insurance area is separate; insurance concerns the dealer’s possible blackjack. Other side-bet circles can have entirely different rules and payouts. Do not read them as part of the main-hand strategy chart.
Read the rule labels before choosing a chart
Look for the natural-blackjack payout and the dealer’s soft-17 rule. “Blackjack pays 3 to 2” and “Blackjack pays 6 to 5” produce different returns. “Dealer must hit soft 17” is H17; “dealer stands on all 17s” is S17. Ask about doubling, splitting and surrender when those rules are not printed.
Use the blackjack payout chart to compare natural payouts, then select the matching settings on the blackjack strategy chart. A strategy chart is a grid of player decisions, while the table layout is the physical arrangement of seats, cards and betting areas.
Follow the deal around the table
After wagers are placed, cards are dealt in seat order with two initial cards per player and one dealer card visible. In the US hole-card game the other dealer card is face down. After any blackjack check, players finish their hands in order, followed by the dealer. The step-by-step dealing guide explains the sequence.
What changes between tables
Some games use a shoe, some deal from the hand, and others use a shuffling machine. Seat count, graphics and side-bet spots can change. A familiar layout does not establish the deck count or every rule. The blackjack rules guide lists the decisions and restrictions to confirm.
