Blackjack guide and beginner tutorial

Follow this blackjack guide from card values and rules to strategy decisions, worked examples and practice. A step-by-step tutorial for beginners.

Start with the fundamentals

Read the blackjack rules and the dealing sequence. Learn why an ace can be 1 or 11 and why a two-card blackjack differs from a total of 21 made with more cards.

Build your decision vocabulary

Hit, stand, double, split and surrender have different consequences. Each guide explains the action, its restrictions and a worked example.

Put it into practice

Use the hand calculator for a specific initial hand, then test your understanding in the ten-hand trainer.

A blackjack tutorial: follow one hand

Suppose your first cards are 10 and 6 and the dealer shows 10. The cards total hard 16. Under the default multi-deck S17 rules with late surrender, the strategy chart says surrender if available, otherwise hit. Two 8s also total 16, but are a pair: use the splitting row instead.

Begin with blackjack rules and card values, find the betting areas and table layout, then work through hit or stand decisions, soft hands and pair splitting. Finish with a basic strategy practice session.
